The New Marlborough Central School is one of Southern Berkshire’s three small schools. Located in the village of Mill River, NMC serves students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. Each year 75 to 85 students come from the five towns within the school district, Alford, Egremont, Monterey, Sheffield, and New Marlborough, as well as from other communities in the region through school choice. Bus transportation is provided from many locations.
Built in 1932, our "little red brick schoolhouse" retains much of its old-fashioned charm. The sense of community among staff, faculty, students and families is strong. New Marlborough Central offers multi-age classrooms, project-based learning, and frequent all school exhibitions and gatherings. Annual events like the Harvest Supper and Family Literacy Day set the stage for parent and school involvement and community building.

New Marlborough Central Academics The New Marlborough Central school provides a unique pk-4 multi-grade level classroom experience. The small size of the school provides for a great amount of flexibility and individual attention. Students receive instruction in English, science, math, and social studies based on the Massachusetts Frameworks and the current transition to the Common Core. In addition, teachers reach out to community resources such as Berkshire Pulse, the Historical Society and Flying Cloud Institute to extend learning and engage students in hands-on learning. The Journeys Reading Program was introduced two years ago in New Marlborough as it was at Undermountain. The school has a laptop cart and is fully covered by a wireless network.
Specials: Foreign language, physical education, art, and music teachers, while housed at Undermountain Elementary, travel to NMC each week to meet with students. The all-purpose room next to the library at New Marlborough Central is used for specials instruction. For physical education, the New Marlborough campus provides ample room for activity, including a playground, a baseball field, and an outdoor basketball court. The elementary librarian visits the newly remodeled library at NMC each week as well.
