The Mt. Everett robotics program recently received a $2,500 grant from the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation along with Dell Computers to start a middle school VEX Robotics team. Chris Thompson, Paul O’Brien, and Tim Newman will mentor the students over the next month to prepare the team for a tournament at the University of New Haven on February 11th.
Technology Coordinator Chris Thompson says, “The grant came about very quickly just before the holiday break. Ideally we would have much more time to prepare for a tournament. We’ll be competing against schools that started their robots back in September. But this is a direction we’ve considered taking the robotics program for the past year or two. The grant will allow us to get started this year and continue a middle school VEX team for the foreseeable future. The same type of skills necessary to engineer and program the high school robot can now be developed by our middle school students.” The team name is Hyper Space and the 9 students will have to build and program a robot capable of both autonomous and remote control operations. A VEX robot can have up to 10 motors & servos. This year’s VEX game is called Starstruck. More information about VEX Robotics can be found at http://www.roboticseducation.org. |
